LEARN TO GIVE. LEARN TO SHARE!!

One of my favorite stories from the life of Mahatma Gandhi is set on a train. It concerns a rail journey that young Gandhi was to undertake in India. It so happened that as Gandhiji climbed on the train, one of his shoes slipped off.As he bend to try and grab it,it fell down to the rail track, while the train gathered momentum. In a fraction of second,Gandhi ji reached for his second shoe and threw it towards the fast disappearing other shoe on the track.

A perplexed onlooker anxiously asked Gandhi ji why did he throw his second shoe. Gandhiji explained: ‘Oh well,if someone is to find one of my shoes, hopefully he will find the other shoe too, and thus have a fine new pair for himself’.

WHAT A MAN! What a wonderful instinctive quick response! Frankly speaking, if you or I were in the Mahatma’s shoe, how would we have literally reacted? Probably ,felt miserable for the  rest of the journey, at the loss of a new shoe. We would have worried about how we would manage  once we  have reached our destination. That one lost shoe would have played on our mind all the way.

Unfortunately, we tend to focus on what we have lost. That other shoe! And we carry that burden of loss, adding to our woes. When instead we could so easily focus on what we have-and see if that  could be of use to someone. Giving away that second shoe did not just make some poor Indian happy(remember,a shoe was quite a luxury for most of our countrymen in those pre-independence days), it made Gandhi happier too.

Perhaps it is time we all shifted focus. Instead of pushing to become go-getter-wanting more, more,-we ought to learn to become go-giver.Learning to give.Learning to share. Instead of spending our waking lives worrying about the shoe that is lost, perhaps we should thank  God for the shoe we still have, and discover how giving it away could make us,and someone else, happier.

This ‘go-giving’ attitude has to become second nature. Instinctive almost. It would not have helped Gandhi ji to have realized half an hour into the train ride that the lone shoe was of no use. It worked because he thought of it right there, right then!

We, too often, find ourselves discussing in the comfort of our homes how we should have-could have-helped someone.Done our bit. When the moment passes, the opportunity sadly disappears too. So,we must become a go-giver.Not a go-getter.Help someone. Share what you have. And discover the joy of not having to worry about the shoe that is lost.

IT IS REALITY THAT LONG TERM SUSTAINABLE SUCCESS TAKES TIME.

Those of you who know about Chinese Bamboo and those of you who don’t know about it may think-what is there for me to tell you all about a Bamboo.Bamboo is after all a Bamboo only.

NO friends! If you think that way, there are surprises for you for sure. There is a very special and interesting story about Chinese Bamboo and life changing lessons to be learnt from this unique bamboo.

Chinese bamboo is a tree that grows really tall-to  a height of over 80 feet.Wow! so high! It takes around 5 years and 3 months to grow to its full height. But there is something more interesting thing about it.You see nothing for the first 5 years after you plant the seed.Except perhaps a little shoot springing out of the bulb and struggling to make a squiggle.

And then,in the next 90 days,it shoots up to a towering 80 feet. Can you believe it?  For the first sixty months all the growth is invisible below the surface. And in next three months-yes,merely  ninety days-it literally takes off and become as tall as the eight story building.

We all need to pause and take action from the chinese bamboo.Nothing of substance happens in haste.Having sown the seed and having initiated something, when we don’t see the results,we get impatient. But patience has its rewards.

As leaders and bosses,we become impatient for results.you should ask yourself whether your leadership style encourages or even allows-the growth of the chinese bamboo.Or are you creating an organization of stunted, but quickly visible trees,so  the next time you feel frustrated by lack of results and want to give up,don’t.Think of the chinese bamboo.

When you feel the world is unjust and is refusing to recognize your hard work and commitment, don’t get disheartened.Five years of subterranean activity will almost always be followed by three months of meteoric rise. And yes, when you finally achieve success,be prepared for people to say: ‘oh,he is so lucky. He has become an overnight success!’

Alas! If only they knew about the CHINESE BAMBOO!

                                                                      MESSAGE

Patience is eventually rewarded.Nothing of substance happens in haste.

RESPECT MONEY ELSE IT WILL LEAVE YOU

IN the year 2008 when everyone was talking about pink slips and zero bonuses and crashing stock markets,it reminds me a story that controlled our tendency to behave  somewhat irrationally in money matters.

Imagine that you are in a store, buying a watch. You like the brand and the design. The strap is just right.Price is Rs 999 that fits your budget. You decide to pick it up but just as you are about to pay for it,you bump into a dear friend. He notices the watch and tells you that he has seen the same watch in the store across the road-priced at Rs 899.A WHOLE HUNDRED RUPEES LOWER!

What would you do? Most of us,I am sure, would walk across to the other store, and save hundred rupees. Why spend Rs 999 when you can get the same watch for Rs 899?Makes sense!

Now,let us imagine another scenario.you are at the store buying an expensive swiss watch.you like the brand and the design. It is priced at Rs1,50,200.And you decide to pick it up.Just as you are about to pay for it,you bump into a dear friend He tells you that the same watch is  available at a store across the road for Rs 1,50,100. A WHOLE HUNDRED RUPEES LOWER!

What would you do now? Like most people, you would probably stay put and buy it there only at the same store.Afterall, what is hundred rupees value when you are spending some1,50,000 rupees?

But we tend to get carried away by an unrelated metric. How much we are spending at a given moment affects our perception of the money being saved. If saving hundred rupees matters to you,it should matter to you regardless of whether you are spending 2000 rupees or 200,000 rupees.we all need to learn  the value of small stuff, those hundred rupees note, regardless of how much we spend. In times of abundance,it is good to be cautious. It may just help stretch the abundance a bit.

Getting money to work for you is no different from getting people to work for you.IF YOU DON’T TREAT YOUR MONEY WITH RESPECT,IT WILL LEAVE YOU. And when the recession hits-as it will sometime-those who valued those hundred rupees even while they were spending big, will find themselves better placed to tide over the difficult times.

                                                                                 MESSAGE

In times of abundance,be always cautious. It may just help stretch the abundance a bit. If hundred rupees really matters to you,it should matter to you regardless of of whether you are spending 2000 rupees or 200,000 rupees.

APPEARANCES OF BALLOONS DON’T MATTER-WHAT IS WITHIN MAKES THE DIFFERENCE!!

In today’s world, appearances seem to matter more to us than our core expertise and strengths. This reminds me of a story of a balloon-seller at a village fair which I want to share with you all.Well, this balloon-seller was selling helium-filled balloons in various colours-red,blue,white,green,yellow…

The string of a red balloon snapped by accident and, as the balloon soared into the sky,the crowd roared and kids tugged at their parent’s arms, urging them to get them balloons.Seeing that it was attracting attention, the balloon-seller released another balloon. This time a blue one, that quickly soared towards the clouds.Soon after,he  released a green balloon. Then a yellow one.

Seeing all the balloons going up,a little boy went upto the balloon-seller and innocently asked: ‘If you release that white balloon, will it also soar as high as the rest?’ The balloon-seller explained: ‘Son,it is not the colour of the balloon that matters. It is what’s inside that makes it rise high!’

As it is true of balloons,it is true of people too.Appearances don’t matter. It is what is within that makes the difference. That is a lesson we would all do well to remember. When we look at other people. And when we look at ourselves.we must look deeper.we must look within.

We tend to judge people by their external manifestations, the way they speak, the way they dress.Sure, first impressions are important but its even more important to ensure that we don’t get carried away.

Some of the smarter, brightest colleagues I have worked with have been shy and quiet and apparently easy to miss.No big talk,no fanfare.Just good minds, the willingness to work hard and can-do attitude. The shirt is not always tucked in properly, the blue socks don’t quite go well with the beige trousers, the heavy accent often jars. But hidden beneath all of that is a REAL TREASURE-a teammate you could be proud of!

When I see young, ambitious people,I sometime worry that they are quick to copy the mannerism and styles and looks of their successful role models-but don’t spend as much time on developing the core: the real value that make for real success. They confuse the visible trappings of  success with the real internal strengths that actually contribute to the success.

                                                                             MESSAGE

IT IS NOT THE COLOUR OF THE BALLOON THAT MATTERS.IT IS WHAT IS INSIDE IT THAT MAKES IT RISE AND SOAR IN THE SKY.

IF YOU DO GOOD THING TO SOMEBODY,YOU CANNOT BIND HIM TO DO THE SAME THING TO YOU!!

After all, just because you do good deed to a scorpion,it does not mean that it will stop him from stinging you, because to sting is his nature.

You must have heard people saying-‘I never thought he would do this to me,not after all that I did for him!’ you may have said this to you too.The sense of betrayal,of being let down,is disgusting. And yet,it seems to recur with unfailing regularity-and it happens in offices,in relationship,in lives. The sense of hurt seems to get compounded by the belief that we did so much for that person. The notion is that since we have done so much for that person-we have possibly bought out his right to do something that would hurt us.

But it may not necessarily happen that way,and it mostly do not happen that way. This is the Reality and the sooner we accept it the better for us.

Have you heard the story of the Scorpion and the frog? Once a scorpion wanted to cross the stream, but since he could not swim,he went over to the frog and requested him to allow him to ride on his back.I cannot swim!!The frog said,I cannot possibly let you do that. You are a scorpion.you will sting me.The scorpion said to frog-I could not possibly do that, because if I did we would both  drown! So you can trust me on this.

Sensing the logic and seeing an opportunity to speak of one’s achievement for having helped a scorpion across, the frog agreed. Well, when they were  in the middle of the stream, the scorpion stung the frog. The frog shockingly asked-why did you do that? He quickly started going down in the water. ‘Because I am a scorpion’ came the reply,as both the frog and scorpion drowned.

What is important here to remember: Just because you do a good deed to a scorpion,it does not necessarily mean that it will stop him from stinging you.

                                                                      MESSAGE

Scorpion will be Scorpion. They sting and will sting.Expecting otherwise will only set you up for a big disappointment-time and again!!

THE MAGIC OF PERSEVERANCE!!

To make you believe that Persistence pays in all walks of life,I would give you a live example of a great Sri Lankan Cricketer, which has always inspired me and I still continue to read this story when I feel the need for self motivation.

That great cricketer is none than Marvan Ata pattu who made his debut in Test Cricket for Sri Lanka but scored zero in his first innings. And  again zero in second innings. He was dropped from the team.So he went back to the nets for more practice. It was only after a wait of 21 months,he got a second chance.

He tried his best this time, but scored zero in the first innings and 1 run in second innings.Dropped again,he went back for more serious practice. He scored tonnes of runs to get out of the painful memories of the Test failures.Well,17 months later, opportunity again knocked at his door.Marvan went to bat in both the innings of the Test. His score:0 and 0

Back to the rigorous practice. The selectors felt that he lacked Test-match temperament. His technique wasn’t good enough at the Test match level. But undaunted, Marvan kept trying with some hope that selectors would someday give him another chance.

Three years later,he got another chance. This time he made runs and in an outstanding career thereafter,he went on to score over 5000 runs for Sri Lanka. This included 16 centuries and 6 double centuries. He never looked back and eventually he became Captain of the Sri Lankan Test cricket team.

JUST THINK ABOUT IT! How many of us can handle failure and rejections the way he handled? IT was six years of trying and failing.Anybody would have been tempted to shift and persue another career. But he did not and THAT MADE THE REAL DIFFERENCE.The next time you are staring at possible failure or rejection in life, think of this great Marvan and just remember this:If you don’t give up,if you believe in yourself,if you stay the course, time will change one day and you would eventually succeed and prove your worth someday.

THIS IS THE LAW OF NATURE AND MAGIC OF PERSEVERANCE.

                                                                MESSAGE

Once,Winston Churchill was asked the secret of success in life. His reply was:NEVER GIVE UP.NEVER,NEVER GIVE UP!

IF YOU FOLLOW HIS ADVICE,PERSEVERANCE WILL REWARD YOU SOMEDAY.
