APPEARANCES OF BALLOONS DON’T MATTER-WHAT IS WITHIN MAKES THE DIFFERENCE!!

In today’s world, appearances seem to matter more to us than our core expertise and strengths. This reminds me of a story of a balloon-seller at a village fair which I want to share with you all.Well, this balloon-seller was selling helium-filled balloons in various colours-red,blue,white,green,yellow…

The string of a red balloon snapped by accident and, as the balloon soared into the sky,the crowd roared and kids tugged at their parent’s arms, urging them to get them balloons.Seeing that it was attracting attention, the balloon-seller released another balloon. This time a blue one, that quickly soared towards the clouds.Soon after,he  released a green balloon. Then a yellow one.

Seeing all the balloons going up,a little boy went upto the balloon-seller and innocently asked: ‘If you release that white balloon, will it also soar as high as the rest?’ The balloon-seller explained: ‘Son,it is not the colour of the balloon that matters. It is what’s inside that makes it rise high!’

As it is true of balloons,it is true of people too.Appearances don’t matter. It is what is within that makes the difference. That is a lesson we would all do well to remember. When we look at other people. And when we look at ourselves.we must look deeper.we must look within.

We tend to judge people by their external manifestations, the way they speak, the way they dress.Sure, first impressions are important but its even more important to ensure that we don’t get carried away.

Some of the smarter, brightest colleagues I have worked with have been shy and quiet and apparently easy to miss.No big talk,no fanfare.Just good minds, the willingness to work hard and can-do attitude. The shirt is not always tucked in properly, the blue socks don’t quite go well with the beige trousers, the heavy accent often jars. But hidden beneath all of that is a REAL TREASURE-a teammate you could be proud of!

When I see young, ambitious people,I sometime worry that they are quick to copy the mannerism and styles and looks of their successful role models-but don’t spend as much time on developing the core: the real value that make for real success. They confuse the visible trappings of  success with the real internal strengths that actually contribute to the success.

                                                                             MESSAGE

IT IS NOT THE COLOUR OF THE BALLOON THAT MATTERS.IT IS WHAT IS INSIDE IT THAT MAKES IT RISE AND SOAR IN THE SKY.

IF YOU DO GOOD THING TO SOMEBODY,YOU CANNOT BIND HIM TO DO THE SAME THING TO YOU!!

After all, just because you do good deed to a scorpion,it does not mean that it will stop him from stinging you, because to sting is his nature.

You must have heard people saying-‘I never thought he would do this to me,not after all that I did for him!’ you may have said this to you too.The sense of betrayal,of being let down,is disgusting. And yet,it seems to recur with unfailing regularity-and it happens in offices,in relationship,in lives. The sense of hurt seems to get compounded by the belief that we did so much for that person. The notion is that since we have done so much for that person-we have possibly bought out his right to do something that would hurt us.

But it may not necessarily happen that way,and it mostly do not happen that way. This is the Reality and the sooner we accept it the better for us.

Have you heard the story of the Scorpion and the frog? Once a scorpion wanted to cross the stream, but since he could not swim,he went over to the frog and requested him to allow him to ride on his back.I cannot swim!!The frog said,I cannot possibly let you do that. You are a scorpion.you will sting me.The scorpion said to frog-I could not possibly do that, because if I did we would both  drown! So you can trust me on this.

Sensing the logic and seeing an opportunity to speak of one’s achievement for having helped a scorpion across, the frog agreed. Well, when they were  in the middle of the stream, the scorpion stung the frog. The frog shockingly asked-why did you do that? He quickly started going down in the water. ‘Because I am a scorpion’ came the reply,as both the frog and scorpion drowned.

What is important here to remember: Just because you do a good deed to a scorpion,it does not necessarily mean that it will stop him from stinging you.

                                                                      MESSAGE

Scorpion will be Scorpion. They sting and will sting.Expecting otherwise will only set you up for a big disappointment-time and again!!

THE MAGIC OF PERSEVERANCE!!

To make you believe that Persistence pays in all walks of life,I would give you a live example of a great Sri Lankan Cricketer, which has always inspired me and I still continue to read this story when I feel the need for self motivation.

That great cricketer is none than Marvan Ata pattu who made his debut in Test Cricket for Sri Lanka but scored zero in his first innings. And  again zero in second innings. He was dropped from the team.So he went back to the nets for more practice. It was only after a wait of 21 months,he got a second chance.

He tried his best this time, but scored zero in the first innings and 1 run in second innings.Dropped again,he went back for more serious practice. He scored tonnes of runs to get out of the painful memories of the Test failures.Well,17 months later, opportunity again knocked at his door.Marvan went to bat in both the innings of the Test. His score:0 and 0

Back to the rigorous practice. The selectors felt that he lacked Test-match temperament. His technique wasn’t good enough at the Test match level. But undaunted, Marvan kept trying with some hope that selectors would someday give him another chance.

Three years later,he got another chance. This time he made runs and in an outstanding career thereafter,he went on to score over 5000 runs for Sri Lanka. This included 16 centuries and 6 double centuries. He never looked back and eventually he became Captain of the Sri Lankan Test cricket team.

JUST THINK ABOUT IT! How many of us can handle failure and rejections the way he handled? IT was six years of trying and failing.Anybody would have been tempted to shift and persue another career. But he did not and THAT MADE THE REAL DIFFERENCE.The next time you are staring at possible failure or rejection in life, think of this great Marvan and just remember this:If you don’t give up,if you believe in yourself,if you stay the course, time will change one day and you would eventually succeed and prove your worth someday.

THIS IS THE LAW OF NATURE AND MAGIC OF PERSEVERANCE.

                                                                MESSAGE

Once,Winston Churchill was asked the secret of success in life. His reply was:NEVER GIVE UP.NEVER,NEVER GIVE UP!

IF YOU FOLLOW HIS ADVICE,PERSEVERANCE WILL REWARD YOU SOMEDAY.

IF YOU CAN SEE IT IN YOUR MIND, YOU CAN HOLD IT IN YOUR HAND LIKE ROGER BANNISTER!!

Yes,you have read it right and many people like me  believe in that dictum.

To make you believe the truth,I would take you to the world of athletics in 1950s.It was back then widely believed that  no human can run a mile in less than 4 minutes.Sweden’s Gunder Haegg had the best timing of running a mile in 4 minutes and 1.4 seconds in 1945.This record could not be broken for several years and experts were unanimous in the view that four-minutes barrier could never be broken and it was strongly perceived that a man could attempt to do it only at the cost of physical harm to his body.

But,as I have said above,Roger Bannister could see it in his mind and  hold it in his hand on 6th May,1954 and did something which was impossible.Roger ran the mile,at an event in London, and touched the finish line in 3 minutes and 59.4 seconds and broke the 4 minutes barrier. He did what people said was impossible.

Well, this is not the end.By the end of 1957,sixteen other runners had run the mile in less than 4 minutes. The so-called mental barrier was totally smashed!

So what miracle actually happened? No miracle happened! It was only that somebody could see it shattering this mental barrier in his mind and that opened up the floodgates. What Roger did that day  not merely set a new world record, but,he demonstrated that if you think you can,you can and that’s exactly he did.

We are all like that elephants who are held by only a small rope tied to their front leg.

No chains! No cage!

When those  elephants are smaller, they are tied only with a small rope and at that age it is enough to hold them.As they grow up they are conditioned to believe that they cannot break away.So they never try to break free.

Likewise, many of us go through our life hanging on to a belief that we cannot do it simply because we believe we cannot do it or because we would have failed at it once before.

As the Roger Bannister story shows, once he broke the four-minutes-mile barrier, the mental barrier in the  minds of all runners was shattered. And soon thereafter, sixteen people ran the mile in under four minutes.

WHAT IS YOUR FOUR-MINUTES BARRIER? What is holding you back? Come-on!!Change your mindset, change your belief system.Shatter that barrier and break free-you have nothing to lose but break your mental barrier.

THE MOST MEMORABLE MEMORY OF MY CAREER!!

A DISTRIBUTOR OF OUR COMPANY  SPORTINGLY CLEAN BOWLED OUR ALL INDIA SALES MANAGER

As a young Technical Sales Representative selling Industrial Dyestuffs in Uttar Pradesh, one of my fondest memory is the first time the company All India Sales Manager visited my market. It happened several years  ago in 1980,but it taught me a lesson that stayed with me until this day.

An All India Sales Manager’s visit was rather important because in the company’s history,no All India Sales Manager had ever visited Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh.I was posted in Kanpur just one month before the planned visit of AISM.As a man who would get to travel with the AISM,I was working hard to ensure I had answers to all the questions that may be asked to me.Like, how were the brands performing?  What were the growth rates?  How was the competition behaving? How much money were we spending on local marketing?   What was the profitability of the local distributors? I had worked hard to gather all such vital business informations- and then some more. What was the main crop in the region? What was the population? What was the main source of livelihood of Kanpur village area? The list seemed endless.  But I hoped for the best.

The D-day arrived.  The Area Sales Manager and I picked up the All India Sales Manager(AISM) at the Kanpur Airport and drove out to Kanpur City about 40 km from the airport. The initial discussions were rather general, and extremely friendly.  He asked about my family,my education,my interests but I was still waiting  for the real questions.

We were approaching Kanpur local Dyes Market fast where we had our first appointment  with a most  important Distributor of the company. I still remember the name of that Dyes Distributor-Kunju Babu!!  After introductions and a quick review of his business,we came down to the main agenda.Although 37 years have passed, but I still remember that our discussions in the last leg of meeting was confined to getting  bulk orders from the distributors, never heard of before, in lieu of some attractive Commission.

We were looking for an order of 20 tonnes of dyestuffs to be lifted in that month which was equal to distributor’s four months sales. After lot of discussions and persuations,Kunju Babu(Head of distributor)) agreed to lift this quantity, provided we agree for a 10% commission as against normal commission of 3%.We were reluctant for  10% commission. Our All India sales Manager eventually gave the final proposal as under:

0-5 tonnes-2.5% commission

5-10 tonnes-5% commission

10-15 tonnes – 7.5% commission

15-20  tonnes -10% commion

Our All India Sales Manger told Kunju Babu that it was not possible to give flat 10% commission on entire 20 tonnes but if  you “AVERAGE OUT” this scheme, this will work out to be a very -very attractive commission for you.

Kunju Babu’s immediate reaction was-‘Mitra sahib,I am a very small business man but am double of your age and experience. Can I say something?” Mr Mitra said-yes,yes,pl go ahead kunju babu!

Kunju Babu said-“ Mitra sahib, “ DARIYA MEI AVERAGE LEKAR JAOGE,DOOB JAOGE”(If you try to cross a river on the basis of its average depth-you will drown)

Everybody laughed at his swift comment but it has stayed with me until this day.

         Message

Working out on an ‘average’ principle can backfire sometime.

WHEN DEATH WAS JUST 10 FEET AWAY FROM ME!!

15 Nov,1971, Ranchi Airport(Bihar,India),11 am- I was inside the cockpit of a Glider aircraft which belonged to 2 Bihar Air Squadron. After finishing the routine cockpit instrument checks I was sitting on the co-pilot seat waiting for our instructor  Squadron Leader Vincent Mendonce who was a fighter pilot in India Air Force.I was suppose to fly with him for the last time  before my scheduled SOLO FLIGHT next day which was 16 Nov,1971.

As a young trainee glider pilot,I was very excited and nervous too at the thought of solo flying next day.In the mean time a very well known voice comes behind me and it was Mendy’s (nick name of my instructor) voice, who says-So RB(my nick name),everything ready? I said, yes sir! He gives his thumb approval and I was now set and ready for take-off.And in a few minutes, we were flying over Ranchi Airport at height of approx. 6000 feet.I was suppose to take 3 circuits of the Airport before finally landing our Glider plane.

This was when we were flying 3-4 km away from the Ranchi Airport,we suddenly felt a  very turbulent air pocket.Since it all happened in a fraction of second, we got trapped in this turbulent air pocket. Our Glider started fast losing height and dropping like a stone. Before I could decide to take the next action,Our Instructor Mendy took over the control and started trying his best to recover and get out of this stormy air pocket and he succeeded in a few minutes. But, by then we had lost considerable height, and it was not possible for our Glider plane to land at Ranchi Airport. It had also become imperative to land the glider within 2 minutes because of  our very low height. Our instructor took immediate decision to land the Glider  in a paddy field which was 1.5 km away from the airport. It was a very very risky landing, but we had no option. In a few moment, our Glider landed on the paddy field with a thundering sound. Mendy was finding it very difficult to control Glider’s movement.

Meanwhile, we realized that this paddy field was fast coming to an end and we could not see anything beyond that. This distance was not more than 100 metre or so.Our instructor immediately took a sharp left turn but failed and the left wing of the glider fell and touched the ground. As a result, our Glider started dragging and stopped just 10 ft before the end of the field after which there was a deep slope.

The whole operation lasted for 3-4 minutes and we were virtually going to die, if our Glider did not stop at a distance of 10 feet before the end of the field.

Believe me,this was a moment, when death was just 10 ft from me and there was nothing I could do about it.Since this was a very  very scary moment for me,our instructor wanted to postpone my solo flight scheduled for next day.But I managed to take the full control of my fear and told Mendy that I was determined to take my solo flight tomorrow and by grace of God,I became the first trainee Glider pilot to go solo next day, especially, in the background of such a horrible experience a day before.

                                                                        MESSAGE

If you can face and control your fear, you can achieve your goal by all means.

RESPECT AND PROTECT DIGNITY OF A WOMEN!!

“A Society that does not respect women will perish”

_Bhishma Pitamah-Mahabharat

History is a witness to the fact that whenever the dignity and modesty of a women has been outraged and challenged,it has brought devastating war and loss of huge human lives. If you have seen ‘Mahabharat’ TV serial or read it,you would recall when Bhishma Pitamah, the greatest warrior hero in Mahabharat, had once advised Yudhistir-“A society that does not respect women will perish”.When Sultan of Delhi,Allauddin khiljee invaded Chittorgarh in Rajasthan to outrage the dignity of Maharani Padmavati of Chittorgarh,it led to bloody war and huge loss of lives

It was the lack of respect towards the fairer sex that caused the two great wars in our Hindu epics-the 18 days battle of Mahabharat after Draupadi was humiliated in front of all men in the palace and in RAMAYAN,the war in Lanka when Sita was kidnapped by Ravana.

         In my view,

  • Since charity begins at home, the women in our home should be respected, protected and given equal rights in all matters. They should have their presence in all decision making process and have equal say in all home matters. They must have full freedom to identify their talents and explore their potential, regardless of whether it is your daughter, wife, sister or mother.

  • The number of working women, today, is increasing by leaps and bounds in every field.Be it in the field of Business,Education,Corporate jobs,Civil services,IT,Space and what not, we all have to interact with women at the work places.Remember that men and women may think differently. It is a basic psychological difference. In today’s corporate world and other work places, men and women work together on a common project and they bring a different perspective, which must be respected. Now the top Management should ensure that there is a gender mix in every project. If you are an employee, demonstrate not only respect towards women, but also a receptiveness to their point of view.

  • Last but not least, sexual harassment towards women is rampant at the work places.you must raise your voice against this prevailing practices and condemn this cowardice act in all forums.

  • We all know even though women have become fighter pilots, space astronauts, renowned scientists, top police officers,Corporate CEO,Prime minister of a nation and have proved their credentials in every field,we still have a long way to go.It is a matter of shame when we still see a large number of infanticides(prevalent practices of killing infants) and a very low percentage of girl literacy, the prevailing evil practices of dowry. It is all so disgraceful and shameful. What is required is girl child must be educated and well educated and the nation will awaken and progress.Women should be empowered to effectively handle and implement any social work.

AND TO DO THIS,OUR PRIMITIVE AND FEUDAL MINDSET MUST CHANGE AND THAT WILL ONLY COME WITH RIGHT EDUCATION TO RURAL AND URBAN WOMEN.
