Two Salespersons went to a tribal area to investigate the market potential for Garments. Both of them saw that nobody wore any elaborate clothes or garments there. They were all mostly scantily clothed and some wore no clothes at all. Both the salespersons made their notes and returned. They submitted the following reports upon their return.
FIRST SALESPERSON: There is no potential here- nobody wears garments.
SECOND SALESPERSONS: There is massive potential here- nobody wears garments.
As you can clearly see, exact same situation was interpreted in two very different ways by the two salespersons.
Simple!! the first salesperson has a negative approach towards the situation, the second salesperson is very positive about it.He sees an opportunity that the first one failed to notice.
These are not only the examples. We encounter so many such situations in our day-to-day life. It is upto us how we interpret them. With a negative attitude, we can walk right past opportunities and not notice them. Whereas with a positive attitude we can find opportunities where none exist atleast on the surface.
The salesperson with a positive attitude has a road map in his mind to tackle the situation. He is able to draw an action plan to act upon his observations(thoughts), whereas the first salesperson lacks this attitude.
The salesperson with a positive attitude is more creative. He is able to come up with new idea about what could possibly be done to encourage the tribes to start wearing garments, and what can be done so that the business can be generated out of sales and purchase of garments.
Human creativity and will power has the power to turn imagination into reality. In order to deal with negativity and to make our attitude positive, we need to make some deliberate efforts.
