Yes,you have read it right and many people like me believe in that dictum.
To make you believe the truth,I would take you to the world of athletics in 1950s.It was back then widely believed that no human can run a mile in less than 4 minutes.Sweden’s Gunder Haegg had the best timing of running a mile in 4 minutes and 1.4 seconds in 1945.This record could not be broken for several years and experts were unanimous in the view that four-minutes barrier could never be broken and it was strongly perceived that a man could attempt to do it only at the cost of physical harm to his body.
But,as I have said above,Roger Bannister could see it in his mind and hold it in his hand on 6th May,1954 and did something which was impossible.Roger ran the mile,at an event in London,and touched the finish line in 3 minutes and 59.4 seconds and broke the 4 minutes barrier.He did what people said was impossible.
Well,this is not the end.By the end of 1957,sixteen other runners had run the mile in less than 4 minutes.The so-called mental barrier was totally smashed!
So what miracle actually happened? No miracle happened! It was only that somebody could see it shattering this mental barrier in his mind and that opened up the floodgates.What Roger did that day not merely set a new world record,but,he demonstrated that if you think you can,you can and that’s exactly he did.
We are all like that elephants who are held by only a small rope tied to their front leg.
No chains! No cage!
When those elephants are smaller,they are tied only with a small rope and at that age it is enough to hold them.As they grow up they are conditioned to believe that they cannot break away.So they never try to break free.
Likewise,many of us go through our life hanging on to a belief that we cannot do it simply because we believe we cannot do it or because we would have failed at it once before.
As the Roger Bannister story shows,once he broke the four-minutes-mile barrier,the mental barrier in the minds of all runners was shattered.And soon thereafter,sixteen people ran the mile in under four minutes.
WHAT IS YOUR FOUR-MINUTES BARRIER? What is holding you back? Come-on!!Change your mindset,change your belief system.Shatter that barrier and break free-you have nothing to lose but break your mental barrier.
