“None but ourselves can free our minds” – Bob Marley
Yes, I totally believe in the above proverb-Do you?
Once I was passing the elephants in my village. I suddenly stopped confused by the fact that these huge creatures were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg.
No Chains! No cages!
It was obvious and you would agree with me that the elephants,at any time, could break away from these small rope’s bonds, but for some reason, they did not do so. Meanwhile,I saw a trainer or mahawat (as they are known in villages) nearby and asked him-why these splendid animals just stood there and made no attempt to get away?
“Well” he said,”when they are very young and much smaller,we use the same size of rope to tie them and,at that age,it is enough to hold them.As they grow up,they are conditioned to believe that they cannot break away. They believe, the rope can still hold them.So they never try to break free.”
This was really amazing and unbelievable, but, the reality was in front of me.These animals, who have the strength to lift gigantic weight, could easily and at any time break free from their bonds.
BUT BECAUSE THEY BELIEVED THEY COULD NOT, THEY WERE STUCK-SIGHT WHERE THEY WERE.
Like the elephants, many of us too go through our life hanging onto a belief that we cannot or can never do something simply because,we believe we cannot do it or because we have failed at it once before.
